Antisemitism in schools and colleges in England

JVL Introduction

In March, the UK government put out a call for submissions to an independent review “which aims to improve how schools and colleges in England deal with antisemitism and other forms of racial and religious prejudice”. The deadline for submissions has just passed.

We post below the thoughtful response to this call submitted by the Jewish Socialists’ Group (JSG).

Communities, it argues, can and must learn from each other’s experiences of racism in order to strengthen and expand empathy and solidarity, rather than engaging in building a league table of suffering.

The growing awareness of young students to the situation of Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank should not be seen as something to be suppressed and silenced, as many educational establishments seem to do

JSG’s submission stresses instead the importance of grasping this opportunity of engaging with students and confronting some dangerous antisemitic stereotypes that are circulating on social media.

And they point to the impossibility of confronting the racism expressed freely by some parties and mainstream media with the requirement that teachers challenging antisemitism should be “politically impartial”.
