What is Antisemitism? – Zoom Education Workshops

These interactive workshops help you to discuss what antisemitism is and what it isn’t, and how to respond when you encounter it.

Allegations of antisemitism against political activists have become a feature of public life. Many of these allegations are hotly contested. As a result, there is confusion and uncertainty about what can be said without being seen as racist.

We help participants in our workshops to express and clarify in a safe space their views on antisemitism, Israel, Palestine and Zionism. The scope for differing and conflicting interpretations of antisemitism and Israel/Palestine can be seen in this image.

In the workshops we encourage participants to ask questions, express their ideas and gain confidence in engaging with others on racism and other forms of discrimination.

  • A related topic which interests me even more is “what does it mean to be a Jew ?”. If for example you have a Jewish father are you a Jew ? Can you be a Jew but also an Atheist ?
How can we understand anti Semitism if we don’t understand what a Jew is ? This is not purely a matter of self definition. As a Christian man I can’t simply say “I am a Jew” even though Jesus was a Jew.
I worry very much that “what is a Jew” is still heavily influenced by anti Semites and the Nazis in particular.

  • Why is there a need for education workshops on anti-Semitism? Did those who fought Moseley’s fascists in the 30s/40s or the National Front in the 70s/80s need to be educated on what anti-Semitism was?

The OED definition ‘hostility or prejudice against Jews as Jews’ is more than enough. Anti-semitism today is a prejudice not a form of racism. Jews do not suffer from state racism or discrimination.

That is why Suella Braverman gives £15 a year to the CST and just £1 to combat Islamaphobia. It is also why the CST has as its guest of honour the same Cruella.

‘Antisemitism’ is weaponised against the left and the Palestinians precisely because it is no longer a form of racism

  • Just because Tony G takes the view that he doesn’t need education on this topic isn’t a good reason to deny it to those who do.

  • Allen says that just because I don’t need education about anti-Semitism it doesn’t mean that others don’t need it.

What I question is why anyone needs it. What is there to study? As Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart observed in relation to pornography ‘I recognise it when I see it’.

Of course the study of anti-Semitis historically, how it changed, what part it played in modern day and European politics is a subject in itself but I do question this need for education about what it is.

This was the JLM theme and we all know what that was about. The ‘re-education’ of people so that they understood by anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism were congruent.
